Analysis

AFTER TOUCHDOWN ON RUNWAY 9 WITH THE WIND FROM THE SOUTH AT 7-8 KNOTS, THE AIRPLANE VEERED OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY INTO SHRUBS THEN NOSED OVER.

Factual Information

On May 7, 1994, about 1120 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 182P, registered to Edward R. and Shirley L. Costello, nosed over after experiencing loss of control during landing roll at the Crystal River Airpark, Crystal River, Florida, while on a 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was substantially damaged and the private-rated pilot and one passenger sustained minor injuries. The flight originated from the Venice Municipal Airport, Venice, Florida, about 1015. After touchdown on runway 9 with the wind from the south at 7 to 8 knots, the airplane veered off the right side of the runway into shrubs then nosed over.

Probable Cause and Findings

FAILURE OF THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING THE LANDING ROLL.
