Analysis

THE PILOT WAS COMPLETING A VISUAL FLIGHT RULES PERSONAL FLIGHT. THE PILOT FAILED TO MAKE THE INITIAL LANDING AND EXECUTED A GO-AROUND. ON THE SECOND LANDING, THE AIRPLANE LANDED LONG, OVERRAN THE RUNWAY AND WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT.

Factual Information

On October 15, 1994, at 1300 hours Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 177RG, N7577V, overran the end of the runway at a privately owned airstrip, Clark Ranch, near Laytonville, California. The pilot was completing a visual flight rules personal flight. The airplane, registered to and operated by the pilot, sustained substantial damage. Neither the certificated private pilot nor his passenger was injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight originated at Smith Ranch Airport, San Rafael, California, at 1130 hours. The pilot said in the aircraft accident report that he executed a go-around on the initial approach to the airport. He said that on the second landing he could not stop the airplane and it overran the end of the runway.

Probable Cause and Findings

were the pilot's failure to maintain the proper airspeed and attain the proper touchdown point.
