Analysis

The pilot landed to the north at his private airstrip. The dirt and gravel runway was 3,300 feet long. He estimated that the wind was from the west at 10 knots. As the airplane decelerated during the landing roll, it encountered a patch of ice, snow, and mud. The airplane then veered off the right side of the runway and struck a snow bank.

Factual Information

On January 22, 1998, approximately 1500 mountain standard time, a Cessna 182Q, N759QZ, owned and operated by the pilot, was substantially damaged when it collided with a snow bank during landing near Keeline, Wyoming. The certificated private pilot and his two passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the personal flight being conducted under Title 14 CFR Part 91. The flight originated near Keeline approximately 4 hours before the accident. According to the pilot, he was landing to the north at his private airstrip. The dirt and gravel runway was 3,300 feet long. He estimated the wind to be from the west at 10 knots. As the airplane decelerated during the landing roll, it hit a patch of ice, snow, and mud. The airplane veered off the right side of the runway and struck a snow bank, shearing off the nose landing gear. There was additional damage to the left wing tip, firewall, cowling, and floorboard.

Probable Cause and Findings

failure of the pilot to maintain directional control of the airplane during the landing roll. Factors relating to the accident included: a snow covered/icy/muddy area on the runway, and the proximity of a snowbank to the runway.
