AS THE PLT WAS APPROACHING TO LAND IN THE OPEN OCEAN NEAR KEY LARGO, FL, A BIG WAVE APPEARED. THE PLT PULLED THE NOSE OF THE ACFT UP & ADDED POWER. HOWEVER, THE ACFT IMPACTED THE WAVE CREST & WAS CATIPULTED UPWARD IN A NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE. IT THEN CAME DOWN ON THE LEFT WING WHICH SEPARATED FROM THE ACFT. THE ACFT SANK IN 12 FT OF WATER AFTER FLOATING ABOUT 35 MINUTES. THE PLT REPORTED THAT THE WIND SEEMED TO BE LIGHT & VARIABLE. HE ESTIMATED THAT THE WAVES WERE 1 TO 1-1/2 FT HIGH, EXCEPT FOR THE WAVE OR SWELL THAT THE ACFT HIT.
