Analysis

THE ACFT NOSED OVER DURING AN OFF ARPT FORCED LANDING AFTER THE ENGINE FAILED IN CRUISE FLT. THE ENGINE WAS DISASSEMBLEDAND EXAMINED ON 12/3/84. THE #3 AND #4 PISTON RODS WERE SEPARATED FROM THEIR CRANCKSHAFT JOURNALS. MOST OF THE ROD BEARINGS WERE WORN. THE ACFT HAD BEEN OPERATING IN AN ENVIROMENT WITH COLD WINTERS. THE ENGINE OPERATIONS MANUAL STATES THAT SAE 30 WEIGHT OIL OR 10W-30 ARE RECOMMENDED FOR OPERATIONS IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 40 DEGREES F. THE ENGINE HAD 40 WEIGHT OIL PUT IN AT THE LAST SEVERAL SERVICINGS. THE TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW 40 DEGREES THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT.
