The pilot landed the airplane in the bean field after the engine started to run rough. After working on the airplane's fuel lines with local farmers, the pilot attempted to takeoff on a gravel road next to the bean field. During the takeoff, the engine started to "miss" and the pilot landed on the gravel road and impacted a ditch. The pilot was not a certificated airframe or powerplant mechanic.
On July 2, 2001, at approximately 1230 central daylight time, a Piper PA-28-140, N1828T, owned and piloted by a private pilot, received substantial damage following a loss of engine power during takeoff from a gravel road located approximately 3 mi southwest of Albion, Illinois. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR Part 91 ferry flight was not operating on a flight plan. The pilot reported no injuries. The flight originated from Owensboro, Kentucky, at time unknown, en route to Dallas, Texas. The pilot landed the airplane in the bean field after the engine started to run rough.
