Factual Information

On August 25, 2008, about 1410 eastern daylight time, a Beech BE-55, CC-PBY, registered to and operated by Inversiones Aeronauticas Y Servicios Aereos Limitada, as a personal flight, collided with a private residence while maneuvering in the vicinity of Curico, Chile. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed. The airplane received substantial damage and a post crash fire ensued. The commercial pilot and two passengers were killed. The flight originated from San Javier Las Mercedes, Chile, at 1325. According to an Air Traffic Control (ATC) controller on duty at General Freire Airport, Curico, Chile, the pilot called on their radio frequency at 1351 and reported 10 miles north of the airport at 6,500 feet. About one to two minutes later the pilot informed the controller that he needed to land at Curico due to an engine problem. A few moments after the call the pilot declared an emergency. The controller observed the airplane making a right turn until the airplane disappeared from view behind a tree line. This accident investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Chile.
